Why Gold Prices Differ From City to City in India
Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Kochi rarely print the same number on the same morning. Transport, dealer premiums, local demand and levies explain the gap.
India imports nearly all of its gold, and it enters through a handful of ports and refineries. Everything after that is logistics and local demand — which is where city-to-city differences come from.
Four reasons the numbers diverge
Transport and handling. Gold has to physically move from import and refining points to regional bullion dealers. Distance and insurance cost money, and that cost lands in the local rate.
Dealer premiums. Bullion dealers quote a premium or discount to landed cost depending on how much physical metal is moving. In heavy wedding and festival demand, premiums widen. In slow months they compress, and the domestic market can even trade at a discount.
Local consumption patterns. Southern markets, particularly Tamil Nadu and Kerala, have consistently high per-capita gold demand. Sustained demand supports a firmer local premium.
State-level taxes and octroi-type levies. These have narrowed considerably under GST, but local charges have not vanished everywhere.
Why the gaps are usually small
The differences are typically a matter of rupees per gram, not hundreds. Arbitrage keeps them tight: if one market runs meaningfully rich, metal moves there.
What this means for a buyer
Do not travel to another city to save on the metal rate. The gap is small and travel costs are not. The variable actually worth shopping around for is making charges, which differ far more between two jewellers in the same street than the metal rate differs between two cities.
How city rates work on GoldVarta
We publish a national benchmark, then apply a per-city adjustment that an editor configures and can update. Every city page states clearly that the figure is indicative and shows the benchmark it was derived from. We do not claim to independently measure a separate rate in each city, because no national spot feed does that.
Disclaimer: Rates are indicative and may vary based on market conditions, local premiums, taxes, jewellery making charges and other applicable charges.
