Festival and Wedding Season Demand in India
Indian physical demand has a strong seasonal shape. Here is how the calendar affects premiums, discounts and jeweller promotions.
Indian gold demand is not evenly spread through the year. The calendar matters, and it shows up in local premiums rather than in the international price.
The seasonal shape
Physical buying concentrates around the festival period and the wedding months that follow — roughly the second half of the calendar year through to early the following year. Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and Diwali are traditionally strong buying occasions, and wedding purchases cluster in the auspicious months.
Off-season months see materially lower footfall.
Where it shows up in prices
Not in the international spot price — India is a large consumer, but the global market is set globally. It shows up in the local physical premium: the amount over landed cost that dealers charge for immediate metal.
In strong demand, premiums widen. In weak demand, they compress, and the Indian market has at times traded at a discount to landed cost.
The promotion cycle
Jewellers compete hardest during peak season, and the competition typically appears as reduced or waived making charges rather than a discount on metal. Since making charges are the most negotiable part of a bill, a genuine making-charge promotion can be worth more than a small move in the rate.
Read the terms. Waivers are often limited to specific collections, minimum weights or a subset of designs.
What a buyer can do with this
- If timing is flexible and you want the best negotiating position on making charges, off-season footfall is lower and jewellers are more receptive.
- If you are buying in peak season anyway, compare making-charge offers across shops rather than chasing the metal rate.
- Do not assume festival pricing is automatically better or worse. Check the itemised bill.
A caution
Seasonality is a tendency in aggregate demand, not a prediction about the price in any given week. Global drivers can and regularly do overwhelm it.
Disclaimer: Rates are indicative and may vary based on market conditions, local premiums, taxes, jewellery making charges and other applicable charges.
