Gold Price Forecasts: How Much Should You Trust Them?
Target prices make good headlines and poor plans. How forecasts are built, where they systematically fail, and how to read them properly.
Price targets circulate constantly. They are worth reading, and worth reading sceptically.
How a forecast is actually built
Most institutional gold forecasts are conditional models. An analyst assumes a path for real yields, the dollar, central bank demand and investment flows, then derives a price consistent with those assumptions.
The output is only as good as the inputs — and the inputs are themselves forecasts of things that are notoriously hard to forecast.
Where forecasts fail systematically
Path dependency is ignored. A target for a year out says nothing about the route. A forecast that turns out right can still be preceded by a drawdown that stops out anyone who was leveraged.
Shocks are unmodellable. Wars, banking failures and policy surprises are, by construction, outside the model. They are also responsible for a meaningful share of gold's large moves.
Revisions arrive quietly. Targets get updated as conditions change. The revision rarely gets the coverage the original headline did.
Herding. Published forecasts cluster. Being wrong in company carries less career risk than being wrong alone.
How to read one usefully
Ignore the number. Read the assumptions. A forecast that says "we expect X if real yields fall and the dollar weakens" is telling you what the analyst thinks matters. That framework is useful even when the target is not.
Then ask what happens if the assumptions are wrong — a good piece of research will say.
