Hallmarking and HUID: What Changed for Buyers

Mandatory hallmarking and the six-digit HUID moved purity from a matter of trust to a matter of record. Here is how to use that.

GoldVarta DeskPublished

For most of the history of Indian gold retail, purity was a question of trust in your jeweller. Mandatory hallmarking changed the basis of that relationship.

What is on a hallmarked piece

Three marks:

  • The BIS standard mark
  • The purity grade — 916 for 22K, 750 for 18K, 585 for 14K
  • The HUID, a six-digit alphanumeric code unique to that individual item

The HUID replaced the older combination of assaying-centre mark and year code with a single traceable identifier.

What it lets a buyer actually do

Look it up. The BIS Care app resolves a HUID to the registered jeweller, the item description and the certified purity. That takes about a minute at the counter, and it is worth doing before payment rather than after.

If the app returns nothing, or returns a description that does not match the piece in your hand, stop and ask.

Why it matters most at resale

Purchase-side protection is the obvious benefit. The larger one arrives years later. Un-hallmarked gold is routinely bought back at a discount, because the buyer is pricing in uncertainty about what they are getting. A hallmarked piece with its original invoice removes that uncertainty.

What hallmarking still does not cover

  • Stones. Diamond and gemstone quality is a separate certification entirely.
  • Weight basis. Confirm whether you are billed on gross or net gold weight.
  • Price fairness. Nothing about the hallmark tells you whether the making charges are reasonable.

Practical checklist

Verify the HUID in the app, confirm the purity grade matches the rate being charged, and keep the itemised GST invoice with the item. Those three habits cover most of what can go wrong.
